“Marmaduke” is a fun family film because the tale wags the dog.

Director Tom Dey takes a serious approach to comedy in bringing the comic strip to the big screen by looking at how the massive Great Dane wants to fit in so much, he’ll do anything.

Marmaduke (voiced by Owen Wilson) must adjust after his owners move from Kansas to California. He goes from top dog to mutt outcast when he runs into the cliques at the local dog park. His biggest rival is Bosco (Kiefer Sutherland), the alpha dog of the pure breeds.

Attempts to be part of the pack result in a series of adventures and misadventures that leave Marmaduke in the dog house.

Too often, directors of films aimed at younger audiences (see “Furry Vengeance”) dumb down the action and storylines. That’s cinema suicide because there are no guarantees young viewers will like the juvenile approach. But you can be assured adults will be bored.

Dey doesn’t make the humans mindless caricatures, a mistake many directors in this genre make. Lee Pace and Judy Greer play rational parents who don’t turn into babbling idiots when the family pet does something wrong. Having them be normal people who just happen to have a colorful pet gives the adults in the audiences a way to connect with the film.

The voice casting is perfect, especially Wilson’s welcoming good-old-boy voicing of the big dog and the supporting voices – from Emma Stone as a street-smart mutt to Stacy Ferguson as the pure-bred object of every dog’s attention. Sutherland’s alpha dog is what Jack Bauer would sound like walking on four feet.

Films aimed at young audiences don’t have to carry a strong message, but it’s a bonus that the script by Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio is more than just a series of sight gags. There is a surfing sequence and a dance number that crosses over to silly, but that’s OK when the silly is the exception and not the rule.

“Marmaduke” works because the charm of the comic strip is maintained through a story that never talks down to the audience, voice casting that sells the story and Dey’s direction that’s aimed at all ages.

Night of the Hunter tells the story of Harry Powell, a murderous con man who thinks he is doing the lords bidding by ridding women of their sinful desires. Harry spends the bulk of the story wooing a widow, Willa, to find out where her late husband hid ten thousand dollars before died. Willa doesn’t know but her two children, John and Pearl, know, and are keeping the secret from Harry. Night of the Hunter is a noirish, nightmare told from a child’s perspective, and the entire narrative is told using opposing forces, Love and hate, children and adults, and good and evil. Laughton along with Director of Photography, Stanley Cortez, use their choices in lighting to juxtapose the good and evil forces in a child’s nightmare where adults, are either evil, or allow the children to be harmed.

The films subject matter deals with stark contrasts, as mentioned above, most specifically, good and evil, and the mise-en-scen mimics this. John, Pearl and Mrs. Cooper are seen as innocent and good, and are portrayed that way, in softer, more naturally looking light, while Powell, who is seen as evil is often seen in harsh, or low key lighting or as a silhouette or shadow.

The first scene between John, Pearl, and Powell occurs at night, when John is in bed with Pearl telling her a story. The interior of the bedroom is lit with low-key lighting coming through the bedroom window placing shadows on the room. John stands in the light shining through as if it were a spotlight, when Powell walks in front of the light source casting an ominous shadow into the room as he does into the children’s lives. This silhouette coupled with the foreboding score clearly defines the children as good and Powell as evil even though he is a supposed man of god.

Mrs. Cooper is the only adult in the film who is purely good, who does not facilitate in some way the children’s torture by Powell. When Laughton introduces Mrs. Cooper the camera tilts upward from her shoes to her face. She is shown in more natural key lighting to give the audience a favorable impression of her. The audience is supposed to realize, as are the children that this woman is on their side. During Mrs. Coopers’ final confrontation with Powell, the exterior of the house is shot in low-key lighting with Powell again shown only as a silhouette. A cut to the inside of the house shows John is lit with three point lighting in a setting with a pitched roof reminiscent of the murder scene with Willa. This emphasizes the religious themes in the movie and the contrast of good and evil. While Powell thinks himself a man of god, it is the children who are the pure at heart and are portrayed in favorable light, while Powell lurks in shadows the entire film.

As Powell sings a religious hymn outside Mrs. Cooper is inside staying up. She is at first seen in profile as a silhouette but the close up of her shows her in softer, three point lighting while Powell continues to sing being lit by harsh light making only his face barely visible. It is this scene that is perhaps the best example of the contrast of good and evil. While Powell in the shadows sings his song insincerely, Mrs. Cooper, who is films only example of adult goodness sings the alto part of the hymn with the deepest candor.

Dangerous Calling is a Faith-based movie by the Daws Brothers. It’s the story of a young pastor and his wife, who relocate to help a struggling Orthodox Church that had recently lost its pastor. The thriller unwinds slowly as their temporary host, who also happens to be a widow in the Church, turns out to be more than just a rich old lady.

She begins trying to weave the new Pastor around her little finger, just as she had his predecessor… but first, his wife has to be permanently out of the way. As you would expect, this proves to be a difficult feat. Meanwhile, the unsolved death of a little girl several years earlier resurfaced during the Pastor’s wife’s trip to the bookstore. What began as a simple hunt for an interesting read, leads her down an unforgiving path to uncovering a murder… but it doesn’t happen quite that easily.

The mystery around the widow gets a healthy boost from her rather sheepish and creepy adult son, Elijah, who seems to be rather withdrawn and unusually submissive to his mother. She had taken several measures to ensure he stayed single, and was determined to keep it that way as long as she lived. Elijah however had an inner sense of right/wrong, and this little detail proved to be a lifesaver at the climatic conclusion of the movie.

Through a series of thrilling, tense, and quite engaging scenes, Truth finally prevails and this little Church becomes liberated from the stronghold of evil. I sort of expected everyone to live happily ever after, but some main characters did not make it to the closing credits… which was another opportunity to reflect on how real this story is… and the fact that it is happening in some Churches as we speak!

The movie is peppered with humorous “laugh out loud” moments, as well as scenes that will make you reflect on the state of some of our Churches today. I like the way the movie displays the sovereignty of God despite the shortcomings of the Church.

Dangerous Calling received a Family approved rating (12 and up) from the Dove Foundation. I definitely recommend this movie for Adults and older teens who do not mind getting a real view of Church politics at its best.

Since its earliest days of development, the value of most computer animation was judged by how accurately it represented or substituted for reality: are skin tones believable, are textures authentic, is motion natural or smooth? But at least as far as animated movies are concerned, many (including lots of audience members) have forgotten that many of the medium’s best examples were ones where abstraction and exaggeration were a big part (if not the biggest) of their artistry; notwithstanding feature-length classics like Snow White or Dumbo, filmmakers like Chuck Jones and Tex Avery entertained audiences by expanding their imaginations with punch lines, characters and even worlds that were anything but realistic.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is the most cartoonish animated film I’ve seen in a long time, and I mean that as a compliment. Taking inspiration from Looney Tunes classics, Buster Keaton, and Jerry Bruckheimer movies in equal measures, co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have adapted Ron and Judi Barrett’s kids book into a true larger-than-life tale, creating a world that scarcely resembles anything that could or would happen, and manages to be all the more exciting because of it.

The film stars Bill Hader (Adventureland) as Flint Lockwood, an amateur inventor who inadvertently creates food-flavored weather when his latest device launches itself into the sky and starts turning clouds into cheeseburgers. Much to the chagrin of local hero ‘Baby’ Brent (Andy Samberg), not to mention concern of his father, Tim (James Caan), Flint becomes an overnight celebrity, and Mayor Shelbourne (Bruce Campbell) promptly enlists his help resuscitating the former sardine town’s economic prospects. But when a comely weather girl with the heart of a nerdy-girl-next-door named Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) begins to question how much food is too much – and when it is, how it will stop – Flint finds himself torn between the new adulation of his fellow citizens and the possibility that they will soon all be swept up in a tornado made of pasta and meatballs.

Suffice it to say that the premise is nothing new, even to animated features: oddball outsider finally finds acceptance but at the expense of his core values. And mind you, I’m not intimately familiar with the Barretts’ original book, but I suspect that the narrative of the movie has more to do with the influence of blockbuster epics like Armageddon and Jurassic Park than anything on those printed pages. But for some reason that kind of simplicity works in the Cloudy’s favor, if only because it provides such a terrific template for someone to graft onto it the wonderful and bizarre concept of food literally falling from the sky. The truth is, there needs to be a sense or normalcy (again, not to be confused with reality) for that concept to play off of, and Miller and Lord (who also wrote the script) maximize both its conceptual and comedic possibilities with their feverish, subversive creativity.

The animation, meanwhile, manages to be both powerfully simple and meticulously detailed: the characters themselves are crafted from the most basic shapes, resembling googly-eyed muppets or the protagonists of cartoons from the ’40s and ’50s, but all have a delicate patina of texture and depth that gives them dimensionality. For example, although Faris’ character Sam is primarily defined visually by her choice of eyewear and the way she wears her hair (and in a brilliant about-face, considered prettier when she’s bespectacled in a ponytail than when she’s more cosmopolitan), her cheeks are dotted with freckles and her clothes give her a true, womanly physique. These, quite frankly, are the kinds of details that make characters “real,” at least visually speaking; while I’ve certainly celebrated the virtuosity of images in older animated films, this one seems to know better than to let technique or even just technical considerations get in the way of streamlined character definition and development.

Further, Lord and Miller load these characters with simple, straightforward and compelling problems that pay off in ways that enrich the film’s emotional resonance. Flint’s distant relationship with his father is certainly at the heart of all of his desperate inventing, but the movie doesn’t languish in the moments of their inability to communicate, nor waste time explaining the subtext of their estrangement. Meanwhile, Cloudy again teaches a valuable lesson to young girls about valuing themselves as intelligent people rather than just beautiful ones, and gives even peripheral characters something that the audience can see motivates their behavior, thankfully without pointing it out or bashing viewers over the head with founts of exposition or explanation.

Most of all, though, Cloudy is just freaking funny. My favorite scene in the film is a slightly disturbing, borderline-mean “handheld” point-of-view snowball fight where a newly-liberated Flint decimates children and adults alike with scoops of mint-chocolate chip ice cream, but there are countless moments where Lord and Miller find the right way to make a joke less obvious and more effective. Not unlike the humor of folks like Seth Rogen and the other guys in Judd Apatow’s comedic brain trust, much of the movie’s best material comes from a place of snarkiness weighted with sincerity, and Lord and Miller (who spent part of their careers working on How I Met Your Mother) manage to find the right balance between momentary punch lines and delayed payoffs in order to create something that works for kids and adults, without much disparity in their relative comprehension or appreciation for what’s happening. (Plus, they put a monkey in it, and they’re always funny.)

Ultimately, Cloudy With the Chance of Meatballs isn’t quite an “event movie” like the Bruckheimer epics from which it takes inspiration, or possibly even the Pixar movies that it competes with. But there’s something to be said for a movie that manages to tell you an effective, straightforward story, still shows you a whole bunch of things that you’ve never seen before, and somehow makes the combination of the two add up to something emotionally meaningful. In fact, this film marks the first time in recent memory I would associate the word cartoonish with a piece of entertainment and not mean it as a criticism. Other filmmakers will almost certainly create worlds more dense, tactile, and faithfully authentic, but Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs works so wonderfully because Miller and Lord understand that it doesn’t matter how realistic something is, as long as it’s believable.

This is a pleasant and clever animated film about a super ‘bad’ villain who accidentally becomes a super ‘dad’ villain. The story is about Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, who is one of the world’s most notorious super villains. But with age setting in he has found himself being outdone by a younger super villain named Vector, voiced by Jason Segel. In order to prove he is still the world’s best super villain, Gru decides he is going to steal the ultimate prize – the moon. To do this he’ll first need to steal a special shrink ray gun. But the problem is Vector has already stolen the gun and has it stored away safely in his impenetrable fortress. So Gru decides to adopt three orphans to help him gain access to the fortress by selling Girl Scout Cookies to Vector.

It’s quite an original story and a breath of fresh air from the many predictable copy-cat animated movies lately. It’s also well-written with plenty of comedic scenes for the kids and a few for the adults. And like any good movie it has it’s highs and lows where you’ll be laughing one minute and holding back a tear the next. One of the highlights of the movie is the acting job by Steve Carell. Known for his role on the TV show ‘The Office’ and movies like ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin’ and ‘Date Night’, Carell was starting to seem like a one-trick pony. But with the character Gru, he not only changes his voice , but he also changes his style of comedy. It may have only been a voice acting job but it definitely shows that he does have some range in his acting skills and is capable of portraying much more interesting characters. The movie is also full of many adorable characters from the three ‘cute as a button orphans’ Margo, Edith, and Agnes played by Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier and Elsie Fisher, and the many ‘Twinkie-like’ minions that are sure to be one of the biggest collectible toys this year.
